I have to say that I disagree about Breakfast Club, Thirteen and Girl Interrupted being related (Requiem For A Dream is on another level and has nothing to do with the others apart from drugs). Anyway the Breakfast Club is in it's own little niche, a coming of age film without the sense of 'going off the rails' and definitely a more positive outlook on youth. Everyone can relate to it, in it's context, whereas the others are just small tragic stories from random people's lives.

I totally agree with you in that requiem for a dream and breakfast club are at the opposite ends of the spectrum, and im not saying all those movies are all the same, I just think they all share common themes, some more than others, but most of them touch on/are a mix of sex, drugs, maturity, todays youth, addiction, individuation, mental health etc. i know this is probably looking into it too much but you could say they all reveal the insecurities and vulnerabilities of humans, and how desperate, unstable and fragile the characters are, For example in Thirteen you can see how desperate Tracey is to fit in which correlates with Breakfast Club! I would give 123123 other examples but I dont want to clog the feed, come off anon!

how is the breakfast club in the same genre as requiem for a dream? a movie about teenagers in detention compared to a movie about heroin and psychosis

I agree they’re not really the same but requiem for a dream ( WHICH IS THE MOST FUCKED MOVIE EVER) has the same themes as the other movies I suggested such as “candy” and “basketball diaries”, and breakfast club also shares similar themes with “thirteen” and “girl interrupted”. Overall most of them share common ideologies such as notion of individuation, the effect of drugs, and coming of age in our current day of life, and thats why I love them all!
